First published: 8 November 2024 on Finn McCool Marketing. Updated: 17 October 2026. This is a historical account of an impersonation attempt, with revised safety advice.
A message offering a substantial marketing budget can be convincing when it appears to come from a familiar brand. In November 2024, I received an enquiry from someone claiming to represent Bose. The conversation moved towards a downloadable campaign brief and a request for a proposal.
This article records what I received and why it concerned me. Bose was the brand being impersonated; this is not an allegation that Bose sent the messages or operated the scam. The names and domains below describe the correspondence and reports from that period, not verified identities or claims about who owns those domains today.
The first message looked plausible
Having worked in fraud prevention, I was cautious when someone calling themselves James Martin contacted me about marketing work. My initial check showed that the sending domain redirected to the official Bose website. At a glance that looked reassuring enough for me to reply.
That was the important lesson: a redirect is not proof of a business relationship. A person controlling a different domain can redirect it to a genuine brand’s website. The same applies to links to genuine social accounts, copied logos and an impressive email signature.
The first message said the company wanted advertising partners for expansion into the United Kingdom. It complimented my services and invited a discussion about strategy and budget. Nothing in those claims independently established the sender’s identity.
The follow-up introduced a download and a large budget
The next email described monthly advertising budgets of $50,000–$90,000, potentially increasing to $150,000–$270,000, and a proposed service fee of 12–18%. These were the sender’s claims, not a verified opportunity or an assessment of Bose’s real marketing budget.
It also offered campaign materials through a Dropbox ZIP download. The combination of tailored business language, apparently valuable work and a request to review files created a reason to act quickly.
I checked the domain further. The historical lookup below recorded a creation date of 6 November 2024, two days before the article was published. A recently registered domain alone does not prove fraud, but it was a significant inconsistency to investigate in this context.

Recognisable wording from the emails
The excerpts below are retained so someone receiving similar wording can recognise the pattern. They are statements made by the sender. Live brand links, the download link and unnecessary contact details have been omitted.
The opening approach
“I am James from Bose, a US-based audio brand. We are planning to expand into the United Kingdom market and are looking for support from advertising partners.”
“I have reviewed your services and believe that your company can meet our needs. We would love to discuss strategy, budget, and the services you provide.”
The promised budget
“Our current advertising budget ranges from $50,000 to $90,000 per month for the brand awareness phase and can increase to $150,000 to $270,000 during the sales growth phase across all sales platforms.”
“Our proposed service fee is between 12-18% of the total monthly marketing budget (+ any applicable taxes).”
The reason to open the files
“In addition to public data, we have prepared detailed documents gathered by the company on marketing campaign objectives, including: annual sales data, product pricing, CRM information, ROAS, ad conversion rates, cost-per-conversion, etc., so you can better understand the project during your research or planning phase.”
The message then labelled the download “Campaign Materials,Service Fees,Bonuses,Job Requirements”. It asked for a preliminary plan by the following Tuesday or Wednesday and said a meeting and cooperation contract would follow.
The chasing message
“Today, my company’s management asked me to respond and report the results of the partner’s feedback.”
A subsequent message pressed for a quote and added a more elaborate signature. Apart from the security risk, this approach can waste a business owner’s time preparing a proposal for work that has not been independently verified.
What readers reported at the time
The original article received 66 comments, including reader reports of similar approaches. Reports and updates mentioned variants such as bose-asia[.]com, bose-tech[.]com, bose-inc[.]com and bose-usa[.]com, alongside bose-global[.]com. The claimed names included James Martin and Ryan Bond. These are historical reports, not verified identities or a complete, current blocklist.
One reader reported finding a Windows shortcut among otherwise plausible campaign files. They said the shortcut would launch a command to download additional material. That report was not an independent forensic analysis by me, and it cannot establish what every recipient downloaded or whether a particular device is safe.
The 66 original comments are restored below with the names, dates, times and reply threads shown on Finn McCool Marketing. They include further reported names, domains and message variants. These are historical reader reports from November 2024, not new submissions or verified current security advice; quoted web and email addresses are displayed without active links. For current next steps after an unexpected download, use the updated guidance in this article rather than reassurance in the old discussion.
How to check an unexpected marketing enquiry
- Verify the business relationship independently. Find the company’s contact route yourself and ask it to confirm the person and brief. Do not rely on the telephone number or links supplied in the suspicious message.
- Check the full sender address and reply-to address. A display name or familiar logo is easy to copy. Small differences in a domain deserve attention.
- Pause before opening files. A familiar file-sharing platform does not verify who uploaded a file or what it contains. Do not disable security controls to read a supposed brief.
- Ask for an ordinary introduction and a clear scope. An independently verified conversation should come before detailed unpaid proposal work or access to your advertising accounts.
- Keep a record and report suspicious contact. Preserve the original email for your IT team or the relevant reporting service. Avoid forwarding a dangerous attachment to colleagues as something to open.
If you downloaded something or entered information
Do not take reassurance from the file being a ZIP, or from a quick scan finding nothing. My original article was too definite about recipients being safe if they had not run a particular file. I have removed that assurance: the appropriate response depends on what happened and the device involved.
Stop interacting with the message and follow your organisation’s incident process or get help from a trusted IT professional. If you entered a password, use the genuine service through a trusted route to secure the account. If payment information or money is involved, contact the bank promptly through a known channel.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre provides official guidance on spotting and reporting phishing, including what to do after sharing information. Use that guidance for the circumstances you face rather than treating this historical case study as a diagnosis of your device.
The lesson for agencies and small businesses
A convincing brief is not the same as a verified client. Familiar branding, relevant terminology and an attractive budget can all be copied. Taking a little time to check who is actually contacting you protects both your systems and the time you would otherwise spend on a proposal.
For a broader checklist, read how to spot a fake client enquiry or marketing proposal.

Actually scheduled an appointment with me, lol. Number, name, website and phone all match yours. Spend enough time working with fraud (ecom 15 years, Cybersecurity 2) and these stick out like a sore thumb. Usually it’s that excitement you get reading an email.. (any email that get’s you excited is 99% of the time B.S. lol)
I was 99% sure it was a scam at first glance but thought I’d see if others were receiving the same email. Confirmed Scam. Thank you for posting.
BTW – I recalled seeing something with similar messaging mentioning Movato watch. We also received a scam message using Conde Nast name. They even sent a fake cashier’s check.
Found your article while doing our due diligence. They are trying to get to asia based marketers now and its now bose-asia.com

[email protected]Same spiel, same links, and same downloadable file. The file from Dropbox isn’t infected yet; its a legit zip file, but inside is a well-structured folder with product photos, a company profile pdf, and a bunch of legit files. There is only one file of type shortcut that, upon checking its properties, will run cmd.exe from your machine and then download a file from github to be installed and setup. I think that’s when the trouble will start.
Thank you very much for putting up this article. It saved us a lot of trouble! Cheers to you, Finn McCool, and all the best!
That’s really helpful info, I had a sneaky peaky at the download contents and was surprised how much effort went into that folder with images, etc. My assumption was there was something in there.

Best regards,
I received the Thai version of the first email from a
[email protected]too. Thought the email address looked legit and got fooled by the redirect to the real Bose site. Only reason I found this forum was because I couldn’t find his profile on LinkedIn. I’m in Australia, but had the email referred from the Americas.I got it too in London, seemed to good to be true and suspicious, then got an identical follow up reply to what you have here which seemed dodgy, so I searched deeper and found your site. Much appreciated thanks.
I also received this few days ago for my uk business.
Checked the email domain and got tricked.
Thanks for your article it saved my time dealing with the scammer.
For the record, red flags:
1. Signature is an image not text
2. Checked him on LinkedIn and found nobody
3. Asked him to contact me in LinkedIn and didn’t reply
4. Fortunately I was on Linux and couldn’t open the file
Thanks again!
Yes the 301 redirect on the domain they contacted from got me on first contact. I also checked the name and couldn’t find on linkedin so thought it doing this post for people doing the same search.

We received the same scam but from Lancel (handbag brand) instead of Bose last September. I guess the brand can shift to any other.
Thank you for the article; I also received an email requesting my corporate photography services. I felt the initial email was a scam, but without links in the 1st email, I played along with a reply. This morning’s email was a clear giveaway of a scam. So, I researched how popular this scam is and found your article. It’s great you took the time to put this together. Our objective is to launch advertising campaigns aimed at increasing brand awareness and effectively reaching target audiences on Google (Search Ads, Display Ads, App Ads, Video Ads, etc.) and on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.), with an initial budget of approximately $50,000–$270,000 per month.
After reviewing your services, we are interested in discussing your proposed strategies, budget options, and specific services. We believe your team can support us with effective tracking, flexible optimization, and efficient budget control.
Please feel free to reach out to us via email at your convenience.
Best regards,
Received it as well. It’s from a @bose-tech.com domain and introduces himself as James (Bond) but signs as Ryan. They only sent a YouTube link. My boss did answer and I’m not sure if they have responded yet but I already made him aware.
Just in case, I did search for this guy in LinkedIn and of course there were no results.
Me too. Any legit multi-national corporation would never put together such an elaborate email with mounds of info and ask for random companies to respond.
I reached out to BOSE headquarters and spoke with support to request HR contact information (James Martin –
[email protected]). After a brief hold while the representative consulted her manager, she informed me that the individual in question does not work at BOSE (can’t be found), and they advised not to engage further.Additionally, the folder they sent includes an Excel sheet, PDF presentations and a suspicious excel sheet file disguised as a screensaver. Additionally, one of the document files is only 2KB, which is unusual. Please do not open the link or any files. If you have already done so, run a virus scan immediately and delete the zip file and folders to ensure your system’s safety.
Hope this helps!
I got it today (14 NOV 2024) and it was written in Portuguese and uses the name now as Ryan Bond, Director of Marketing. He also used the same phone number, which, when I called said, please contact this subscriber and ask them to pay their phone bill. 646 956 3718

[email protected]– phone number 6469563718) for “a collaboration” aimed to expand the Bose brand in the Italian market… They used our website’s form. The message (in Italian) is almost identical to the one published by Paolo here today:
Cordiali saluti, Ryan”Yeah, right.
And here I thought i was special… 🙂
They even used my home language, Afrikaans.

[email protected], Thanks for your article.I received the same email, in dubai, via my company’s contact US form first in Arabic then the Guy named “Ryan Bond” replied back to our automated email with the same kind of email. I tried doing a bit of research when we received this enquiry but there was nothing on the internet about it. I unfortunately did reply back to the email which contains my phone-number and email, i hope that they will not be able to do anything with that sort of information. Additionally, just before researching about him online i downloaded the dropbox file on my phone which is a basic company mobile. I wasn’t able to extract the file on my phone luckily but after researching i have deleted the file. I hope i have not fallen into any scam or put my company information into jeopardy. Would really appreciate any sort of advice & really appreciate you for uploading this sort of information online. Thank you.
I would not worry, you can tell by the comments how far reaching this is. It will be automated and something in the download, which rarely affect mobiles.
Any information you have given is public information anyway.
